Resources for General Mental Health

  • Alberta Alliance for Mental Illness and Mental Health (AAMIMH) – The AAMIMH is a consortium of diverse provincial organizations, professional associations, not-for-profit service provider organizations and organizations representing consumers and their families. The AAMIMH does not provide direct service but rather attempts to work with this diverse group to develop a common position on issues around mental health and mental illness. They attempt to work with service providers including the government to identify gaps in services and also identify opportunities and promote research.

  • The Alberta Family Wellness Initiative (AFWI) - The AFWI is a program established by the Palix Foundation, a pro-active private foundation with offices in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. The AFWI's aim is to apply emerging research about experienced-based brain and biological development as it relates to early childhood development and children’s mental health, and its lifelong impact on addiction and other negative health outcomes. The AFWI works to connect and integrate the science, policy, and practice communities within a framework of epigenetics and developmental and behavioural neurosciences.

  • Addiction Guide - Addiction Guide was created to provide the most comprehensive up-to-date information about various addictions and how to overcome them. It is not a treatment center, but through their network of centers and connections across the United States, they can provide outlets for people seeking help. Addiction Guide consists of a diverse team of recovering addicts, healthcare professionals, and patient advocates who can provide the public with tools and advice to help those suffering from addiction to regain control of their lives. 

  • Addiction Centre - A resource providing step-by-step help through the addictions recovery process as well as specific information on different types of substances.

  • Canadian Mental Health Association – This is a national charitable organization that promotes mental health and supports the resilience and recovery of people experiencing mental illness. This web site has information about mental health, mental illness and a support centre with helpful links and resources.

  • Centre for Addiction and Mental Health - CAMH is Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital. CAMH combines clinical care, research, education, policy development and health promotion to help transform the lives of people affected by mental health and addiction issues.

  • National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) – NIMH envisions a world in which mental illnesses are prevented and cured. The mission of NIMH is to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.
