About CASA and the Role

CASA is a major non-profit community-based provider of mental health services for children, adolescents and their families within greater Edmonton and from Central and Northern Alberta. Since 1988 CASA has provided assessment and treatment services for up to 4,000 children and adolescents ages three to 18 each year through a continuum ranging from consultation in community outreach settings to intensive treatment programs.


CASA’s Pharmaceutical Nursing Consultation (PNC) program provides non-urgent information, support, case consultation and capacity building services to Children’s Services (CS) staff. The pharmaceutical nurse consultant provides staff and caregivers with education on psychotropic medications, health, mental health, and community resources to support children and youth in care.


As a pharmaceutical nurse you will have the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team including, clinical support workers, managers, nurses, caregivers and more. Working with this team you will be able to enhance capacity of caregivers and staff in medication management. You will also be able to facilitate trusting and positive relationships between healthcare professionals and the community.


Job Duties

  • Completes appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) to identify mental health concerns and current risk

  • Completes pharmaceutical consultations

  • Integrates assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals and provide nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health

  • Monitors, evaluates and modifies nursing care plan based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment, in collaboration with the patient and care team

  • Provides information and instructions to assist in understanding the clinical condition and ongoing care and management

  • Provides relevant medication teaching

  • Acts as a resource and provides training to team members to assist in their professional development

  • Participates regularly and constructively in program and clinical team meetings

  • Provides preceptorship to students and interns as assigned

  • In consultation with the clinical managers, helps identify evaluation measure and outcomes



  • Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse. BScN preferred.

  • A minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in children’s mental health would be an asset.

  • Strong knowledge of medications and medication administration.

  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.

  • Community-based mental health experience is required.

  • Current and clear Criminal Record Check is required.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

  • Strong understanding of support systems in the community.
