About CASA

CASA is a major non-profit community-based provider of mental health services for children, adolescents and their families within greater Edmonton and from Central and Northern Alberta. Since 1988 CASA has provided assessment and treatment services for up to 4,000 children and adolescents ages three to 18 each year through a continuum ranging from consultation in community outreach settings to intensive treatment programs.


Job Purpose

Reporting to the program manager, the child care counsellor works collaboratively with their colleagues in a team environment providing treatment to adolescents with significant mental health challenges and their families. The child care counsellor provides behaviour management, guidance, support, supervision and case management to the children or adolescents and their families in the program.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in case management of assigned children or adolescents and their families.

  • Implements and monitors individual treatment plans for the children or adolescents.

  • Maintains clinical records.

  • Supervises and organizes daily living activities of the children and adolescents.

  • Provides supervision of children and adolescents during unscheduled program hours.

  • Conducts individual and group activities as a member of the program team.

  • Participates in the provision of individual, family or group therapy.

  • Communicates with other service providers.

  • Contributes to staff knowledge and understanding of discipline-specific issues.

  • Provides preceptorship to students of the same discipline.

  • Educates staff about clinical practices and developments in their discipline.

  • Plans for and engages in continuous learning opportunities.

  • Contributes to program planning.

  • Contributes to the development and use of performance indicators and other activities related to continuous quality improvement.

  • Participates in research as appropriate.

  • Participates regularly and constructively in program and clinical team meetings.

  • Considers patient safety as a priority and ensures services comply with  provincial legislation and current standards of practice.

  • Reports near-misses and events which could or do cause harm to patients. 

  • Strives to improve practice and procedures in order to improve service outcomes and patient safety.

  • Cooperates with management in patient safety measures, and participates in related educational opportunities.

  • Executes other tasks or responsibilities as required from time to time.



  • Diploma or degree in child and youth care, BSW, BA or BSc (psychology)

  • Possess previous experience working in children’s mental health. 

  • Be fluent in case management and supportive counselling for adolescents and their families.

  • Be clinically effective in rapport building with adolescents and their families.

  • Be experienced in working within a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Have a positive and energetic demeanor.

  • Have a flexible schedule to accommodate different shifts required in the child care counsellor, casual position.
