CASA is a trusted non-profit organization delivering holistic, culturally safe wrap-around mental health services to children three to 18 and their families in Alberta. We do this through a team of specialized mental health professionals who are trauma experts committed to delivering outcomes-based programming in collaboration with community partners. CASA’s vision is a community where all children, youth and their families are provided timely mental health care and empowered to thrive.

The addictions counsellor (AC) is an exciting new role at CASA that will be working closely with an inter-disciplinary team to support youth living with both mental health and addictions challenges. The AC will work closely with mental health therapists (MHTs) to deliver co-therapy concurrent care, design and deliver workshops for clinicians on addictions and concurrent care and support youth and families out in the community. The AC will be supported by the professional practice lead and other ACs across the organization.

Job Description

Reporting to the program manager, the addictions counsellor works collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team members to ensure success in the area of clinical service delivery. The addictions counsellor provides addiction treatment for adolescents and their families experiencing problems related to alcohol, drug, tobacco, gaming, gambling and co-occurring addiction and mental health problems. The addictions counsellor practices according to the training and code of ethics of their specific discipline, and applies the principles of evidence-based practice to all aspects of their work. The addictions counsellor nurtures collaborative linkages with community partners. Duties include:

  • Provide services unique to the appropriate professional discipline (addictions, psychology, social work, nursing, occupational therapy).

  • Provide client-focused, recovery-based and culturally-appropriate assessments.

  • Develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions appropriate to the youth and their families.

  • Conduct psycho-educational support and treatment groups for adolescents and parents.

  • Advocate on behalf of the youth and family as appropriate. Meet youth and families at their starting point, which may include community based meetings and support.

  • Be an active, contributing member of a multi-disciplinary clinical team whose purpose is assessment and treatment case review and consultation.

Minimum Salary: $35.52 per hour

Maximum Salary: $45.02 per hour

Hours per Shift: 7.75

Shifts per Week: Five

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in addictions or a combination of a bachelor’s degree in a related field with course work or a diploma in addictions.

  • Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act must maintain active registration.

  • Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.

  • One to two years of addictions counselling experience in community setting is required.

  • Strong communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills.

  • Excellent assessment, treatment and case management skills.

  • Strong grasp of the principles of evidence-based practice.

  • Respect for other disciplines and an ability to work collaboratively with diverse interest groups.

  • Practical experience in a children’s mental health treatment setting.

  • Completion of the National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP) is an asset.
