Social Skills Parenting Support Group “Refresher”

Description:

This parenting support group will assist parents in using the skills learned in the Incredible Years Junior Social Skills and Senior Social Skills groups as the basis for promoting effectiveness as parents. Parents will be encouraged to share their knowledge and experience in acquiring and using effective positive parenting strategies. Parents will be encouraged by the group facilitators to support other group participants and to strengthen their roles in directing their children’s social skills development, personal responsibility, self-esteem, self-control, and problem solving.

Objectives:

  • To provide a safe and secure environment for parents to discuss issues freely and receive support from one another
  • To increase confidence and competence in parenting children with emotional and/or behavioural issues
  • To acquire positive discipline strategies that set limits and encourage independence
  • To use emotional intelligence and energy psychology techniques to empower themselves to be better parents
  • To develop resiliency in parenting as parenting effectiveness is an on-going process

Parents Will Learn To:

  • Have confidence in parenting
  • Use emotional intelligence and energy psychology techniques to help them with parenting
  • Use rewards and consequences effectively
  • Give and receive parenting support
  • Support effective anger management in their children
  • Develop positive disciple strategies that set limits and encourage independence

Format:  

  • Open group
  • Instruction
  • Discussion
  • Practical exercises and handouts
  • Share experiences with people who can relate

Group Length:

  • 2 hour sessions
  • Once per month
  • January to June; September to December

Participants:

  • Parents or guardians (minimum 6 families)
  • 2 facilitators

Social skills parenting support group is offered January to June and September to December (last Wednesday of each month). Please contact the CASA Intake Receptionist for exact dates and times.

Who Can Refer:


Referral Criteria:

Graduates of Incredible Years/Junior Social Skills and Senior Social Skills programs who are interested in receiving more support in parenting skills. Referrals can be made by CASA therapists to Lorna Chatwin at CASA Centre.
