A learning group for parents or guardians and their children

For: |
Children 9-11 years old and their parents or guardians

Parents Will: |
Learn to:
- Have confidence and comfort parenting
- Support effective anger management in their children
- Set limits without resorting to yelling or physical means
- Set effective rewards and consequences
- Give and support for parenting from friends and family
|
|
Children Will: |
Learn to:
- Understand the variety of their feelings
- Develop ways to control feelings that may cause them difficulty (anger, sadness, etc.)
- Communicate those feelings
- Discuss relationships with peers and adults
- Cope with bullying, teasing, criticism
- Improve problem solving and conflict resolution

- Practical exercises and homework assignments
- Share experiences with people who can relate
- View and discuss videos

2 hour sessions, 12 weeks

Senior Social Skills is offered two times a year: September and January.

Who Can Refer: |
Mental Health Clinicians in the Regional Mental Health Clinics and Child Psychiatrists
|
|
Referral Eligibility: |
- The child or family is receiving services through the children’s mental health system
- The referring clinician will make a written commitment to provide follow-up care
- The child is able to participate in and benefit from a social skills group
- The parents or guardians will participate
|

Eligibility exclusions: |
|
|
Information Required: |
- A completed CASA Community and Outreach Group Referral Form
- A summary of the mental health assessment including DSM IV diagnosis, updated within the past year
- A letter of referral stating a commitment from the referring clinician to provide follow-up care
|
|
Referral Process: |
- The referring clinician directs the referral to CASA Intake Receptionist at CASA Centre
- Families will be asked to attend a screening interview where they learn more about the group and expectations
- CASA will advise the referring clinician of the outcome of the referral
|
