Junior Teen Group

What:

A skill building and learning group for younger teenagers and their parents or guardians.

For:

Adolescents ages 12-15 with their parents or guardians

The group format would be beneficial for adolescents who are being treated for depression and or anxiety conditions.  Teenagers who are currently struggling with physically aggressive behaviours directed at their peers or adults will not be suitable for this group format.

 Teenagers Will:

  • Develop skills in identifying feelings (their own and others), learn to monitor the thoughts that trigger these feelings, and develop alternative, healthy emotional/behavioural responses to these feelings
  • Practice problem-solving, conflict resolution, assertive and effective communication techniques with peers and adults
  • Understand effective decision-making
  • Explore the topics of bullying/teasing, self-esteem, and other age appropriate developmental issues

Teenagers / Parents Will:

  • Enhance their positive relationship within the adolescent/parent family unit
  • Practice skills for communication effectively and the teenagers’ social skill development with the support of the parent
  • Through the use of fun activities build an improved cooperative relationship

 Parents Will:

 

  • Understand their role in their adolescent’s behaviour
  • Support and nurture their teen’s learning and changing behaviours
  • Set their own goals for change
  • Monitor progress

Format:  

  • Instruction
  • Discussion
  • Inter-group behavioural activities or assignments
  • Other relevant group activities

Group Length:

2 hour sessions, 12 weeks

Participants:

Minimum of 8 junior high teenagers and their parents or guardians

When:

  • Junior Teen Group is offered two times a year: September (male group), January (female group)

Where:

CASA Centre, 10645 – 63 Avenue, Edmonton, AB

Who Can Refer:

Mental Health Clinicians in the Regional Mental Health Clinics and Child Psychiatrists

Referral Eligibility:

  • The teenager or family is receiving services through the children’s mental health system.
  • The referring clinician will make a written commitment to provide follow-up care.
  • The teenager is able to participate in and benefit from a peer and guardian group.
  • The parents or guardians will participate.

Eligibility exclusions:

 

Information Required:

  • A completed CASA Community and Outreach Group Referral Form
  • A summary of the mental health assessment including DSM IV diagnosis, updated within the past year
  • A letter of referral stating a commitment from the referring clinician to provide follow-up care

 Referral Process:

  • The referring clinician directs the referral to CASA Intake receptionist at CASA Centre
  • Families will be asked to attend a screening interview where they learn more about the group and expectations
  • CASA will advise the referring clinician of the outcome of the referral
