Junior Social Skills/Incredible Years Program 

What:

A social skills program for children 6-8 and their parents or guardians.

For:


 Parents Will:

 Learn to:

  • Increase confidence and comfort in parenting.
  • Foster effective anger management in their children.
  • Set limits without resorting to yelling or physical means.
  • Set effective rewards and consequences.

 Children Will:

 Learn to:

  • Develop an understanding of the variety of their feelings.
  • Develop ways to manage those feelings that cause them difficulty (anger, sadness, etc.).
  • Learn ways to communicate thoughts and feelings effectively.
  • Cope with bullying, teasing, criticism.
  • Improve problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Find ways to make friends.

Format:  

Instruction (videos for children).
Discussion.
Practical exercise and homework assignments.
Share experiences with people who can relate.

Group Length:

2 hour sessions, 12 weeks.

Participants:

Minimum 8 children and their parents or guardians.

When:

Junior Social Skills is offered two times a year: September and January.

Where:

CASA Centre, 10645 – 63 Avenue, Edmonton, AB.

Who Can Refer:

Mental Health Clinicians in the Regional Mental Health Clinics and Child Psychiatrists.

Referral Eligibility:

  • The child or family is receiving services through the children’s mental health system.
  • The referring clinician will make a written commitment to provide follow–up care.
  • The child is able to participate in and benefit from a social skills group.
  • Parents or guardians will participate.

 Eligibility exclusions:

 

  • A completed CASA Community and Outreach Group Referral Form.
  • A summary of the mental health assessment including DSM IV diagnosis, updated within the past year.
  • A letter of referral stating a commitment from the referring clinician to provide follow-up care.

Information Required:

     Referral Process:

    • The referring clinician directs the referral to the CASA Intake Receptionist at CASA Centre.
    • Families will be asked to attend a screening interview where they learn more about the group and expectations.
    • CASA will advise the referring clinician of the outcome of the referral.
