Children Who Experience Family Violence
Since 1997 CASA has operated a program for parents and children who have experienced family violence.
The program is offered in partnership with Edmonton Community Services and the Abbottsfield Partners for Kids and Youth and funded by grants from the Muttart Foundation and the Rotary Club of Northeast Edmonton. The program is an interactive group format including parent, child and family group activities during each session. Each program consists of 10 sessions. Various service providers refer families throughout the region. They are screened for their ability to participate safely and consistently.
The goal of the program is to enhance the parent-child relationship and improve the ability of the participants to maintain safe, healthy relationships. Included in the content is information about family violence and its impact on children and families, strategies for personal and family safety, and exercises to enhance self-awareness and esteem. Effective communication and problem-solving are emphasized and woven into all aspects of the program.
The program is offered twice each year between September and June. The location may vary depending on availability of suitable facilities in the area. A program manual detailing the content and process of the program sessions is available for sale. Proceeds from the sale of the manual support the program operation.
